NANSLO Physics Core Units and Lab Experiments - August 23, 2012

Page history last edited by Sue Schmidt 10 years, 7 months ago

This content represents part of NANSLO project deliverables: Milestones 2-c and 3-b, December 2011.

Table of Contents

1. CORE units

Core curriculum chapters associated with calculus-based introduction to physics.

2. Optional units

Additional units available for use where appropriate.

3. NANSLO Labs

Lab experiments provided by the NIC WASc program and

further revised by the NANSLO Physics Discipline Panel.

4. Colorado Community College System (CCCS) Companion Exercises

Faculty members of the NANSLO Discipline Panels have created their

own customized companion lab exercises that include use of

    RWSL technology.

The documents below have been saved in Microsoft Word (97-2003) format. Because this format can be opened by a wide range of word processing applications (including OpenOffice, LibreOffice, iWorks), it is considered openly accessible.

NANSLO LABS
Lab Manual (Introduction to Labs for First Semester Physics)
PHYS-Sem1-LabManual.doc
Lab 1: Measurements, errors and Experimental uncertainty  PHYS-Sem1-Lab1.doc
Lab 2: One Dimensional Motion (RWSL)

PHYS-Sem1-Lab2.doc

PHYS-Sem1-Lab2-OPTIONAL-calculations.xls

Lab 3: Vector Addition of Forces (Lab Kit) PHYS-Sem1-Lab3.doc
Lab 4: Conservation of Energy (RWSL)

PHYS-Sem1-Lab4.doc

PHYS-Sem1-Lab4-OPTIONAL-calculations.xls

Lab 5: Conservation of Momentum (RWSL) PHYS-Sem1-Lab5.doc
Lab 6: Torque and Rotational Equilibrium (Lab Kit) PHYS-Sem1-Lab6.doc
Lab 7: The Simple Pendulum (Lab Kit) PHYS-Sem1-Lab7.doc
Lab 8: Oscilloscope Speed of Sound (RWSL)

PHYS-Sem1-Lab8.doc

But note comments from discipline panel (from both lab review & sept. workshop) : this lab includes a GREAT DEAL of (probably too much) detail about how to use the oscilloscope, to the detriment of the learning objectives. It would be a better fit in the second semester, preceded by a lab that just teaches the use of the oscilloscope.  CCCS may wish to replace it in the first semester with the existing CCCOnline Kit based lab.

CCCS Companion Exercises

CCCS Physics 111 faculty will supplement existing online course materials provided by Hands on Labs with RWSL companion exercises. The companion exercises serve to introduce students to the application of RWSL technology in specific experiments.
